You could describe this northern corner of Victoria - the strip along the Murray River close to the town of Mildura - as the fruit-basket of Australia. A growers paradise oranges and lemons hang decoratively from the trees bunches of grapes dangle languidly from vines in almost fairytale-like abundance. Abundant also is the sunshine ... the grapes are sweet and ripe and could be almost too ripe to make wine but for the tireless dedication at Elliston. During vintage time they forego a few nights kip and spend them by torch-light plucking grapes from the vineyard instead. This way the grapes arrive cool at the press - their delicate aromatics and crisp freshness perfectly intact all the way down to the bottom of the glass. Dew-soaked grass and citrus aromas. Zesty melon and tropical fruit flavours with a lingering freshness on the finish. Perfect with sushi asparagus carpaccio or just solo.
