Altos del Cabriel Viura Oak-Aged 2004 WHITE Spain

Just goes to show what a little gentle oak-ageing can do ... but then Viura is the great white grape of Rioja whose aromatic freshness is enhanced rather than overwhelmed by the wood - creating clean golden and elegant whites. And because this winery is situated in up-and-coming La Mancha an hour to the south of Madrid you can enjoy a taste of such quality without the Rioja price tag. However like in Rioja 2004 proved a stunning 5-star vintage - in fact for La Mancha it went one better being reported as their "best ever" (Decanter). Delicate pale lemon in colour with fresh and intense aromas of citrus fruits and white flowers. Ripe tropical fruit flavours of pineapple and peaches finely balanced with a slightly toasty character from the oak.
