Wolvehoek Merlot Cabernet 2005 RED South Africa

Wolvehoek Merlot Cabernet 2005 RED South Africa
When members of the medical profession invest time money and passion in a wine venture they are usually very successful. (Australia's Margaret River region is awash with examples). Wolvehoek in the Wellington region of the Cape is owned by international radiologist Dr Lourens Steyn ... and the wines are captivating. Dating back to 1784 this high altitude farm nestling near the summit of the spectacular Groenberg Mountain is the envy of grape growers for miles around. The contrast between warm days and cool nights accentuates the finest aromatic qualities of the grapes. This superb Merlot Cabernet was crafted at the nearby Bolvei cellars by Frank Meaker whose famous grandfather Paul Sauer made wine at the great Kanonkop estate. Ever since he was a lad Frank knew he would one day make fine wines of his own. With marvellous new world ripeness and the elegance of a fine claret this oak-aged cuvee brims with blackcurrant plum and tobacco complexity. The tannins are rounded and well balanced the finish lingering and fresh with a hint of mint. Serve with breast of duck roast beef rare flame-grilled fillet steak or a salt-encrusted haunch of capretto.
