Tsantali Cellar Reserve Five Year Old Oak Aged Mavrodaphne RED Greece

Mavrodaphne is a unique sweet Greek dessert wine lightly fortified to 18% alcohol and much admired by Hugh Johnson. The Mavrodaphne grapes and Black Corinthian grapes are vinified separately untill approximately half their sugars have been converted into alcohol. Fermentation is stopped with the addition of wine alcohol. It is then aged for five years in oak adding roundness and depth to its raisin coffee and vanilla flavours. Says Hugh: "It's a "sweet dark wine between an Italian Recioto and a sort of Port concentrated ... and intended for long ageing and solemn tasting." Drink to 2012.
