Pech de Calade Syrah 2004 RED France

Thanks to 2004's relatively cool vintage Pech de Calade's rich fruit-driven Syrah has an elegance and spicy edge reminiscent of a far pricier northern Rhone red. In fact its made from various domaines near Beziers in France's Midi by Australian supremo Richard Osborne. Selecting only the best parcels when they have reached optimum ripeness he has created a well-balanced complex style of wine incorporating the different terroirs. 100% Syrah Pech de Calade has a rich ruby colour floral nose and big black fruit flavours with that classic Syrah characteristic - savoury black peppar. It's a fine reflection of the many quality wines now coming out of the Languedoc region of southern France - an area that is proving a haven for for good value reds (Joanna Simon).
