Pagos de Tahola Oak Aged Rioja 2005 RED Spain

Rioja fans have been doubly blessed. Following on the heels of 2004 the 2005 vintage also earned the highest possible rating from the region's official governing body ... and Pagos de Tahola's smooth supple release is 5-star quality indeed. Hardly surprising given the Chavarri family have 122 years of expertise use only the best Tempranillo from their prime vineyard high in the Alavesa (famed for more classic flavours than the lower Rioja Baja) and the wine has been aged in expensive American oak barrels for that soft sweet-oak finish. Graceful aromas of crushed black cherry prune and tobacco leaf before a satin-textured mouthful of redcurrant and dark plums with a sweet-oaky moreish finish. A smooth treat ideal with roasted red meats and mature cheeses.
