Hargraves Yarra Valley Merlot 2005 RED Australia

Here's an unrepeatable fine wine deal from the Yarra Valley "Australia's most beautiful vineyard" says Oz Clarke - famed for its expensive reds. But when our specialist Australian Buyer visited in 2006 the market was very different - thanks to a string of bumper harvests top wineries were dropping their prices. With cash upfront we secured this brilliant red before drought frost and fires made prices soar! A trip highlight was this glorious barrel-aged Merlot from an "excellent" winery praised for their "very high quality wines" (Collins Australian Wine Guide). We couldn't refuse the low 'cash price'! We agreed not to use the winery's real name as their wines are usually sold at much higher prices. Then Mother Nature struck and a tiny 2007 vintage put paid to any further such bargains. (Some places have already raised prices 60%!). The best Yarra Merlots "combine richness with finesse" (The Wine Advocate). And they don't come much richer or finer than this - powerfully smooth with lovely soft plum fruit and spicy vanilla oak.
